On July 8, 1947 the United States government recovered an unknown metal, from a crash site near the town of Roswell, New Mexico. According to an initial statement by the government, the recovered debris was from an experimental technology that was intended for surveillance, from a high altitude weather balloon. Some reports from witnesses who claimed to be present, tell a much different and more interesting story. Alien bodies and their space craft were rumored to be recovered, which were thought to come from an unknown planet. The debate and variation between these two basic versions of the story have created the largest debate over unidentified flying objects, or UFOs, in United States history. The believers of the aliens in the crash have disagreed with the military’s official stance, and believe a huge government conspiracy has been in place ever since.
On July 8, 1947 members of Roswell’s Army Air Field reported recovering a flying, disc shape craft from the area. Strangely enough, later the same day there was another press release that said the crash debris actually came from a weather balloon. In the late 1970s, an individual who was involved with the crash recovery was interviewed by a well-known UFO researcher. Major Jesse Marcel was the interviewee, and he firmly believed that alien bodies were recovered and that the government covered the incident up, as soon as they realized the magnitude of the situation. From this point forward, more witnesses and documents emerged over the years making this the premier alien debate, even to this day. The mystique that surrounds the 1947 Roswell Incident has led to countless movies, books, celebrations, television shows, and even music productions. Every so many years, someone within the government or an individual who never stepped forward before, emerges and adds another angle to the story or details new information. This is one controversy that will not rest anytime soon because of the governments strange behavior, in regards to the incident and because of all of the ignored evidence that the public is aware of.
The Roswell Incident will always serve as a reminder for the first event that raised questions about UFOs and alien life forms in modern, American history. The government’s reluctance to speak about the possibility of visitors from another planet has always created mixed feelings among the general public. A noteworthy fact is that former military personnel have come forward over the years to share what they know about the incident, and many rivaled the famous “weather balloon” story. Today, Roswell remains a location of interest, where thousands of tourists flock every year to see the crash site. Only a select few will ever know the truth about what happened in the desert that day, but for many it was proof that extraterrestrial life forms exist.
