Edgar Allen Poe was an American poet and author born in 1809. He’s best known for his talent in writing truly horrifying stories by using very few words, making them much more chilling. He’s also credited with the invention of the detective-fiction genre that currently dominates the literary world.

Poe’s parents died when he was young and although he was taken in by a couple, they never actually adopted him. He attended the University of Virginia and began writing right out of school. He didn’t achieve true success until he published The Raven in 1845. Before he could truly enjoy it, Poe passed away in 1849 at the young age of forty. The cause of his death is still unknown. Speculation ranges from alcohol to cholera and even drugs, suicide or heart diseases. However, Poe’s works live on in history as some of the most macabre and disturbing ever.
